The National Unity Platform (NUP) has raised alarm over the reported abduction of its Election Management Committee Chairperson, Harriet Chemutai, following a late-night raid on her home in Kapchorwa District on Tuesday, February 4, 2026.
According to a statement shared on social media by NUP Secretary General David Lewis Rubongoya, Chemutai was forcibly taken from her residence at around 11pm by heavily armed men.
The assailants allegedly ordered her to accompany them, prompting resistance from people at the scene.
“Ordinary people tried to put up resistance but gunshots were fired to subdue them,” the statement reads.
NUP claims Chemtai was then driven away in the direction of Mbale to an unknown location. By the time of publication, her whereabouts remained unknown, and the party said it had not received any official communication regarding her arrest or detention.
Rubongoya expressed concern over what he described as a growing number of senior NUP leaders who are either missing or being held in detention, raising alarm over the safety of opposition figures.
The incident has renewed calls among opposition supporters and human rights observers for transparency and respect for due process in matters involving political actors.
Police and security authorities had not issued an official statement on the alleged abduction by press time.
NUP has urged the government and security agencies to account for Chemutai’s whereabouts and ensure her immediate release or lawful presentation before the courts if she is in custody.
